Abstract

Construction sites are dangerous for workers. Thanks to automation and robotic technologies, it is anticipated that teleoperating construction robots will minimize the safety risk for human workers. However, construction sites are different from other structured and controlled workplaces such as manufacturing factories, in regard to human-robot interaction. This research aims to investigate how demanding tasks in the construction jobsite affect human-robot interaction and the cognitive load of operators during teleoperation. Challenging factors in this study are hazardous obstacles such as underground utilities and four different levels of time pressure. Experimental results show that the challenging work environment with time pressure increases individual's cognitive load and tends to lower performance. Interestingly, when reasonable time pressure is applied (low time pressure), the performance for human-robot interaction improved in terms of safety and productivity compared to no or excessive time pressure conditions. This research has the potential to contribute to fundamental understanding of human-robot interactions during teleoperation in construction jobsites.

최근 자동화 및 로봇 기술이 발전함에 따라 원격조종 형태의 건설 로봇이 현장에 많이 활용되어 더 이상 사람이 위험한 환경에서 작업하는 것을 최소화할 것으로 기대되고 있다. 그러나 건설 현장은 인간-로봇 상호 작용 측면에서 제조업에서와 같이 구조화되고 통제된 작업 환경이라 보기 힘들다. 본 연구는 건설 현장의 까다로운 작업 환경이 건설로봇 원격조종 시 작업자의 인간-로봇 상호 작용 및 인지 부하에 어떤 영향을 주는지 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. 실험에서 적용된 고난이도 작업환경은 지하 매설관이 가까이 설치된 토공사 현장에서 서로 다른 네가지 수준의 시간 제약하에서 굴착기를 원격조종하여 굴착작업을 하는 것이다. 전반적인 실험 결과를 보면 시간 제약이 있는 작업 환경은 개인의 인지 부하를 증가시키고 성과를 저하시키는 것으로 나타났다. 흥미롭게도 적당한 시간 제약 하에서는 인간-로봇 상호 작용에 대한 작업 성과가 시간 제약이 없거나 과도한 시간 제약이 있는 경우에 비해 안전성과 생산성 측면에서 향상되는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 본 연구와 실험결과는 건설 현장에서 건설로봇의 원격조종 시 인간-로봇 상호작용에 대한 보다 심층적인 이해에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
